Student Breastfeeding Rights Under Title IX

Because lactation is a condition related to sex and pregnancy/parental status, breastfeeding students have rights under Title IX. The U of M’s Makeup Work for Legitimate Absences FAQ notes that lactation is considered an extension of pregnancy that requires flexibility for longer classes or where breaks between classes are inadequate. Students who need to miss a portion of classes or labs may be excused for up to 60 minutes dependent on lactation spaces available and distance from a classroom.
