Introduction

The School of Nursing (SoN) PhD Handbook is a compilation of information and policies specific to the School of Nursing PhD program. It is updated annually by the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) and Plan Level Coordinator. This handbook is designed to provide SoN PhD students and faculty with a readily available source of information about their programs, procedures and graduate student resources. The handbook augments, and is not a substitute for, other sources of information. The Graduate School website explains the policies and the rules of the Graduate School. It has links to all the policies and the many forms that need to be filed with the Graduate School for the PhD program.

The University of Minnesota Graduate Education Catalog provides information about major program regulations and the following details for each of the graduate programs: the faculty members, degrees offered, prerequisites for admission, requirements for degrees, and the graduate courses offered. Please note that, although this catalog is usually accurate, it is not updated by the UMN every year; for the most up to date information, please consult with the DGS or SoN Office of Academic Programs.

The Nursing PhD program is one of many graduate programs offered through the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota. As such, all of the policies governing graduate education at the University of Minnesota apply. The graduate faculty of each program is responsible to the Dean of the Graduate School for the education and training of graduate students in the program. All advising faculty have access to this handbook and have their own handbook as well. Please work with your advisor to make key decisions related to your program.

Students should note that the University-assigned student email account is the University’s official means of communication with all students. Students are responsible for all information sent to them via the University-assigned email account. The University, Graduate School, and SoN rely on the University email accounts and not the postal service or private email accounts for important communications, e.g., tuition billing, degree clearances for graduation, department events and position opportunities. Students are responsible for all information including attachments sent to their University email account. If students arrange to have their University email account forwarded to a private account, then the student must remember to change the forwarding destination of the University account if and when the private account is changed.
