Professional Licensure

Examinations for state licensure may be taken after all program requirements have been completed and the degree awarded. Application and Registration to become licensed as an RN is a two-part process that is described by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. You will need to apply to the Board of Nursing in the State/Territory where you are seeking licensure and register with Pearson VUE (national testing company). Find detailed instructions on the NCSB website.

The requirements for eligibility to take the National Council Licensure Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and to obtain a RN license/registration are determined by the State or Territory, Board of Nursing or Regulatory Body (BON/RB) in the state/territory in which you plan to be licensed and practice. Contact the Board of Nursing or Regulatory Body in the state/territory in which you intend to be licensed to learn their requirements -- state BON/RB contact information can be found on the NSCB Website.

Licensing exam fees, state board of nursing fees and other associated fees related to licensing are the responsibility of the student.

The University of Minnesota School of Nursing is in compliance with the requirements for graduates to apply for licensure from the Minnesota Board of Nursing. but there may be additional requirements for licensure in other states. Contact the BON/RB in the state or territory where you plan to be licensed to make sure you are able to meet their requirements.

In Minnesota, graduates who have passed the NCLEX exam may also choose to apply for a Public Health Nurse certificate (this is not required, but many graduates do this if they would like to use the credentials "PHN" in Minnesota).
