The Job Search

Timing

A common question students ask is when to start searching for a job. It is easy to assume it's best to wait until graduation. However, most employers advise students begin their search at least three months before graduation.

Internship, and summer and part-time positions to support you through school can be posted at any time. Monitor job boards and use the tips below to ensure your search is effective.

Searching strategically

Many job boards (including the ones listed below) offer functions that make your searches more efficient.

  • Save searches: Once you've narrowed your search by entering criteria (such as location, qualifications, or employer), it can be hard to quickly return to that search from scratch. Instead, opt to save the search to quickly return to it in the future.

  • Create job alerts: Receive an email when new jobs that meet your search criteria get posted. This will allow you to keep track of opportunities without having to return to the job board each time.

  • Favorite particular job postings: If there is a position you want to keep your eye on or apply to in the near future, favorite it. This will create a list for you to return to.

  • Use a spreadsheet: Create columns such as position, site, materials required, notes, and status (e.g. applied, cover letter in progress, heard back, or interview scheduled) to help keep you organized.

Get started

There are tons of job boards out there. Below are a few we recommend starting with:

  • Liquid Compass: This site pulls healthcare-related positions and opportunities from across the nation together in one central location.

  • GoldPASS: Being a U of M student or alum provides you access to this site. Be mindful that GoldPASS lists positions outside of health care.
