Team Advising

BSN students are assigned to a primary Academic Advisor in the Office of Student and Career Advancement Services (OSCAS). To learn who your Advisor is, navigate to “My Advisor(s)” in the “Academics” tab in MyU. Students are encouraged to get to know their primary Advisor, but are not limited to their assigned Advisor’s availability and can meet with anyone on the BSN Advising team.

Scheduling an Appointment

Current students can learn Advisor availability and schedule an appointment at any time by visiting bsnadvising.appointments.umn.edu. Virtual and in-person appointments are available, please note the campus location when scheduling an in-person meeting. Students should familiarize themselves with the BSN Academic Advising Syllabus before their first meeting, it outlines what to expect from advising.

Attending Drop-ins

Drop-in advising is available at key times of the semester and will take place either in-person on the Twin Cities campus or virtually. Details about drop-in times, modality, and location can be found in the calendar below.

Drop-ins are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited to 10-15 minute conversations. Please check-in no later than 10 minute before the end of drop-in hours. Students who have questions or concerns that may require more than 15 minutes to discuss or need a signature on any forms, should schedule an appointment.

Advising in Rochester

During the academic year, BSN Advisors will visit the Rochester campus 2-4 times a month on a rotating basis. Virtual advising is available between visits and students who prefer in-person meetings are encouraged to take advantage of the team advising model.

Change of Advisor

It is the responsibility of the student and their academic advisor to cultivate and maintain a positive relationship. However, circumstances sometimes arise in which a change of primary advisor is appropriate. The School of Nursing is cautious about making advising changes and asks you to review the University’s advice for students considering a change of advisor before reaching out.

To request a change of advisor, email Martha Scott Johnson, Assistant Director of OSCAS/Undergraduate Programs Coordinator, at [email protected]. You should provide a description of your concerns as well as the steps you have already taken to address them and your request will be reviewed to determine whether the circumstances warrant a change in advisor. In making a decision, a variety of factors will be considered and you may be asked to provide additional information. Requests will not be approved for students who have not yet met with their assigned primary advisor.

If an advisor leaves their role, their advisees will be notified and assigned to another advisor.
